What is injection molding? Why use injection molding as opposed to burning a disc? What is injection molding? In a nutshell this boring process goes something like this, We make a set of stampers or molds from your master in a mastering system as below. The molds are then mounted into a high tech injection mold machine. Polycarbonate plastic is injected into the mold under high pressure to mold the disc. Once the disc molding is complete, a reflective coating is applied to the disc in a process called "metallization". Lastly the disc receives a special protective lacquer. The disc is spun at very high speed to evenly distribute the lacquer, which is then "baked" under ultraviolet light, very similar to our very own sunbathing process, checked and inspected for errors and you have a perfect CD-ROM duplicate. Why use injection molding as opposed to burning a disc? Top • In-line inspections are performed ensuring that every disc is perfect. • The signal of an injection-molded disc is much stronger than that of a CD-R, ensuring reliability in all readers. • The data side of the disc is more resistant to damage ensuring a longer trouble-free life. • The cost of CD-R blank media added to the cost of data burning is more expensive than molding a disk when quantities exceed over 200 disks. |
